(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE)
Danielle Goyette, recently announced as one of the newest Hockey Hall of Fame inductees, was named as Head Coach for Wick Hockey‘s first on-the-ground foray into China to help grow the grassroots of the game.
Goyette will lead a group of Wick Hockey coaches that will also include Joe Johnston who hails from Halifax and is an internationally recognized goaltending coach, and Cait O’Hara, 4-year Captain of the University of Calgary Dinos who went on to assistant coach the team.
Off the ice, the Wick Hockey group will include two Calgary-based business leaders, Robb Price and Trevor Beckman who have been award-winning entrepreneurs who have dedicated part of their own careers to the growth of female hockey. Price and Beckman will be meeting with both grassroots and high-level government and non-government organizations who are leading the business and philanthropic opportunities for the growth of hockey - on both the male and female side.
“Since retirement I’ve really had the opportunity to step back and see this game from a different perspective. There is so much untapped potential to spark and nurture a love for a game that really gets into your soul, like hockey does,” says Wickenheiser.
The intention of this trip is to explore opportunities for partnership to grow youth, female and male hockey from a grassroots perspective in the fastest growing hockey market in the world.
Wickenheiser continues, “I imagine one day stepping into a bar or a restaurant in China or Ireland or even India and hearing ‘Go Oilers’ being chanted. I think hockey moving into other markets has the opportunity that soccer had coming into the Canadian market 30 or 40 years ago. It’s endless and there are so many entry points. We are going to China with both open minds and strategic consideration.”
Goyette and Wickenheiser have a very long history, having played on the National Team together since 1998, Goyette was a great mentor and friend to a young Wickenheiser. In later years, the two held up plenty of jointly-won gold hardware including Olympic medals and National Championships. Goyette even recruited Wickenheiser to play on the University of Calgary Dinos when she coached the team in the mid 2000’s while Hayley completed her Kinesiology degree.
“Danielle is one of the best coaches in the world, hands down, which is why I went first to her to represent Wick Hockey as an organization on the ice. She is technical, she is skilled, she is a great teacher - she is exactly what young skaters just getting to know the game need,” says Wickenheiser.
“I am so proud that she accepted this gig and even more proud to call her a Hall of Famer!”
The Wick Hockey team leaves for China Thursday, June 29th.
